SUMMARY:In person workshop: From 5G to 6G What is in it for us?
DESCRIPTION:To make the most of 6G\, we need to design it wisely\, maximizing its benefits while minimizing potential risks. By prioritizing thoughtful implementation and anticipating potential drawbacks\, we can harness 6G’s potential while keeping people and the planet at the heart of next-generation mobile technology. \nThe workshop will work with the  6G4Society Citizen Survey\, a unique opportunity for citizens to share their experiences and opinions about current 5G technology and the upcoming transition to 6G. This survey is designed to capture a wide range of insights\, from your everyday use of wireless technology to your thoughts on its future impact. \nImme Ruarus (Waag Futurelab) will talk about the recent research on 5G scenarios. The Imagining Public Connectivity project is a subproject of Quality of Life in Smart Urban Spaces. In “Quality of Life in Smart Urban Spaces\,” Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences\, Waag Futurelab\, Fontys Eindhoven\, and Stadslab Eindhoven investigate how digitalization affects the quality of urban life. The public stack serves as a guide for mapping the different layers of technology (foundation\, design process\, technology\, and citizen perspective). \nWhat did 5G generate in terms of social response? 6G4Society brings  a controversy analysis to better understand awareness\, acceptance and adoption. \nWorkshop Objectives \n\nInvestigate the  public’s level of understanding of complex technologies (e.g. 5G and 6G)\nDiscuss public apprehension or concern (doubts\, uncertainties\, fears and misconceptions)\nBuild relationships across the multiple stakeholders (incl. policy makers\, industry\, telco developers)\nTake seriously and explore tensions\, dissent\, friction\, misunderstanding (incl. dissent within the scientific community)\, misapprehension\, informative asymmetry\, misconception.\n\n  \nTarget Stakeholders \n\nEuropean Telecommunications Industry: Operators\, vendors\, and service providers interested in European sustainability initiatives\nResearchers and project coordinators in Horizon Europe\, SNS JU\, or other European programs focused on sustainable telecommunications.\nNational authorities\, standards organizations\, and policy makers shaping telecommunications regulation.\nSocial movements focusing on sustainability and equal access\nCity officials deploying 5 and 6G in the future\nStartups\, SMEs\, and innovation agencies leveraging European initiatives for sustainable network technology development.\n\nSessions focus \nOpen discussion: How can we involve citizens in project ideas and community projects? Europe leads global sustainable telecommunications through major initiatives including Horizon Europe\, Digital Europe Programme\, and Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU). SUMMARY:Sustainable Places 2025
DESCRIPTION:About\nSustainable Places 2025 \n\n\nSustainability targets and climate change objectives cannot be met without addressing buildings and the built environment at the building\, district and urban scale to include our transport and energy infrastructures. Renowned for showcasing results coming out of the EU Horizon 2020 and EU Horizon Europe Framework Programmes via the participation of cutting-edge research and innovation projects\, the scope of Sustainable Places is captured directly in its name. It involves designing\, building and retrofitting the places we live and work in a more sustainable way.\n\n\n\n\n\nSustainable Places prides itself on being an ideal platform for the dissemination of research\, the conduct of workshops\, EU project clustering and networking between stakeholders of all types. SP2024 was held over three days in a hybrid (digital + in-person) event format. Between opening and closing keynote sessions\, parallel technical sessions and project-organized workshops explored the various conference themes. \nSustainable Places 2025 will be held on 8 – 10 October 2025 in Milan at the Monte Rosa 91 Conference Centre \n“Towards Sustainable 6G – Part II” workshop (October 9\, 9 AM)\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nA clustering workshop titled “Towards Sustainable 6G – Part II” will be held at the upcoming Sustainable Places Conference (8–10 October\, Milan)\, co-organised by the 6G-TWIN\, 6G4SOCIETY\, CENTRIC\, COALESCE\, IN2CCAM and 6Green projects. We welcome the participation of additional projects interested in joining the workshop and contributing to the discussion\, please contact Sébastien Faye (6G-TWIN project coordinator) and Régis Decorme (6G-TWIN dissemination manager) if you wish to participate! \n\nWorkshop Abstract\nThis workshop will continue the dialogue initiated at Sustainable Places 2024 on integrating environmental considerations into next-generation mobile networks. Building on the momentum of the first edition and the jointly published open letter “Towards Sustainable 6G” in Open Research Europe\, this session will bring together both returning and newly funded EU projects under the SNS JU and Horizon frameworks to showcase recent progress in energy-efficient 6G architectures\, renewable energy integration\, sustainable hardware\, and life cycle assessment methodologies. \nNew projects from the latest SNS JU calls will present their objectives and early insights\, broadening the collective understanding of how 6G can support Europe’s Green Deal ambitions. Through interactive discussion and cross-project collaboration\, the workshop aims to foster shared strategies and practical solutions for reducing the environmental footprint of future wireless networks\, reinforcing the commitment to a greener digital transition.
