What is a Good Key Value Indicator (KVI)

This guidance document provides a comprehensive framework for understanding and designing Key Value Indicators (KVIs) in the context of 6G technology development. KVIs represent a strategic shift in evaluation metrics, focusing on the societal, economic, and environmental impacts of technology rather than solely its performance. By distinguishing KVIs from traditional Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and User Experience (UX) metrics, this document outlines principles and methodologies for creating robust, actionable indicators that align technological innovation with fundamental societal values. It serves as a resource for projects aiming to ensure that 6G advancements contribute meaningfully to societal progress and sustainability.

The relationship between values and technology

Understanding the role of values in technology is essential to this mission. Values shape how technologies are conceived, designed, and adopted, influencing their societal impact. This text explores the complex relationship between values and technology, examining how social, cultural, economic, and ethical considerations affect innovation. It provides a structured perspective on how values enter technology and, in turn, how technology reshapes societal values. These reflections align with the project’s commitment to fostering responsible innovation in 6G development.

Technologies in Line with Societal Values – From Theory to Practice

How can technology design reflect the values that matter most to society? This second 6G4Society Insight Report explores the challenges and opportunities of aligning innovation with societal priorities. It looks at how values emerge throughout the research and design process, how they influence decisions, and how tools like Key Value Indicators (KVIs) can help assess impact. Based on insights from the wider 6G research community, the report offers practical reflections for turning values into action — and building technologies that contribute to the common good.

KVIs For Sustainability

Sustainability is a critical priority for research and innovation projects, particularly in the context of advancing technologies like 6G. While traditional Key Value Indicators (KVIs) focus on immediate value creation, they often fail to capture the long-term systemic impacts necessary for sustainable development. This guidance document introduces the concept of Key Sustainability Indicators (KSIs), which reconfigure KVIs to assess sustainability by embedding temporal and systemic dimensions. By shifting the focus from short-term snapshots to tracking enduring impacts, KSIs aim to ensure that technological advancements contribute to societal, environmental, and economic flourishing over time. This framework provides actionable principles and steps to help projects operationalise sustainability, offering a strategic foundation for aligning efforts across individual, organisational, and policy levels.

KVI Value Sheets

This report defines and provides supporting sheets with exemplar Key Value Indicators (KVIs) for five core societal values relevant to 6G technology: Inclusivity, Trust, Safety, Quality of Life (Well-Being), and Building Knowledge and Skills. The report is structured into five detailed value sheets, each addressing a specific value. Each value sheet provides a detailed explanation of the Key Value, its relevance to 6G, corresponding sub-objectives, a stakeholder analysis of pain points and potential impacts, resulting actions/decisions, and implications for technology and use cases, culminating in a set of exemplar KVIs. This multi-faceted approach aims to translate high-level societal goals into actionable metrics for 6G projects.
