6G4Society at ACM GoodIT 2025: Shaping Sustainable Digital Futures

The ACM GoodIT 2025 Summit in Antwerp brought together researchers, innovators, and policymakers to explore how information technology can serve social good. 6G4Society contributed to this discussion through both high-level reflections and concrete research outputs.

Keynote on Sustainable Digital Futures

Dr. Monique Calisti, CEO of Martel Innovate and Founder and President at Digital for Planet, delivered a keynote on building sustainable digital futures. Her talk highlighted the Digital Environmental Paradox: while digital technologies are vital in addressing today’s challenges, they also create significant environmental and societal costs. She called for sustainability to be treated as a design requirement rather than an afterthought. As part of her reflections, Monique referenced the work of 6G4Society, using it as an example of how projects can embed environmental and societal considerations into the early stages of 6G design.

Paper Presentation: 6G Sustainability Business Models

As a direct contribution from the project, Monique co-authored and presented a joint paper with Anna Aseeva and Daniel Onwude, titled 6G Sustainability: Prospective Business Models. This paper shows how the shift to 6G must go beyond bandwidth and performance, and deliver measurable societal, environmental, and economic impact. It argues for:

  • Moving from reactive to proactive approaches
  • Making CO₂ savings by design a core principle
  • Building sustainable and inclusive business models across value chains

Together, these contributions underscored 6G4Society’s mission: ensuring that the next generation of networks is not only more powerful, but also more responsible, inclusive, and sustainable.
