6G4Society takes the stage at Sustainable Places 2024: Paving the way for a greener 6G

The Sustainable Places 2024 conference is set against the backdrop of the pressing global need for innovative minds to shape a more responsible and eco-friendly future. At this year’s event, 6G4Society had Project Coordinator Monique Calisti represent the initiative in the session titled “Towards Sustainable 6G Mobile Networks.”
A Convergence of Visionaries
Sustainable Places 2024 serves as a vital platform for discussing sustainability in various sectors, and this year’s agenda includes a special focus on the intersection of 6G technology and environmental responsibility.
The path to a sustainable 6G future requires strong collaboration between research, industry, and policy stakeholders. The Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) plays a pivotal role in driving these collaborative efforts, fostering innovation and research to ensure that 6G networks are built with sustainability at their core.

The workshop “Towards Sustainable 6G Mobile Networks,” brings together key representatives from Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) projects, 6G-TWIN, BeGREEN, CENTRIC and 6Green, and alongside projects like Zero-Swarm, COALESCE and IN2CCAM to explore how environmental considerations can be seamlessly integrated into the development of 6G mobile networks.
During the discussions, several critical reflections emerged. Participants noted that as networks become increasingly virtualized, their environmental impacts may seem less tangible. However, the transition from 4G to 5G has made it clear that there are significant negative environmental consequences that must be addressed. Achieving a greener economy and society requires more pervasive, resilient, and intelligent networks.
The session emphasized the urgent need to change how technologies are designed, engineered, utilised, and disposed of. This transformation is a multi-actor and multi-disciplinary task, necessitating collaboration across various research, innovation, policymaking, and regulatory domains.
This workshop marked the first of its kind at the Sustainable Places Conference focusing specifically on communication networks.
Leading the Charge for Sustainable 6G
Monique Calisti’s participation highlights 6G4Society’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that the future of 6G not only delivers cutting-edge connectivity but also contributes to the global sustainability agenda. By aligning with EU sustainability goals and fostering collaboration across multiple sectors, 6G4Society is at the forefront of efforts to make 6G both socially inclusive and environmentally responsible.
